Home Book reviews The Mission House

The Mission House

It took a while to get into, about 80 pages or so but once I was into it I didn’t want to put it down for the most part.

I enjoyed  the switching character POVs and short chapters, it helped me to stay engaged despite not always loving the writing. It could be telling over showing and repetitive sometimes; also with moments where the paragraphs or chapters felt unnecessary.

I didn’t feel fully connected to the characters other than Hilary Byrd, and Priscilla, they were the only two I feel we got to know fully (out of 5 or 6 characters we heard from in total). The lack of world building was also disappointing especially compared to Davies’ other two novels. The Mission House wasn’t nearly as atmospheric or engaging. I could hardly tell the age of the characters or what time period the book was set in due to lack of details.

Overall it was interesting enough to finish but one that won’t stay with me and very disappointing in comparison to the beauty that Davies has created in both West and Clear.
