It Would Be Night in Caracas
I read this for my reading around the world challenge for Venezuela! It Would Be Night in Caracas is a literary Dystopian novel. We get switching chapters with glimpses at the present in this dystopian horror that Venezuelan has descended into, as well as the years prior getting to know MC Adelaida and a few other minor characters.
This had a lot of very dark and violent moments that could be difficult to read at times. Aside from the bleak story, there were poignant moments about identity and grief. Birth is also used as a metaphor throughout the book to demonstrate key moments in Adelaida’s life.
Despite the violence and depressing majority of what happens, there were also glimpses of hope-and joy displayed in the reflections of Adelaida’s past-that made for moving read! And although it’s dystopian, I did learn a bit about Venezuela and can’t wait to read more (hopefully happier) books from the country.
